Machu Picchu


Machu Picchu is South America's best known archeological site. Although know to locals for long time, outside world learned about its existence only in 1911. It is believed that Machu Picchu once was an important ceremonial center as the exceptional quality of stonework and ornaments indicate.

Intipunku - 'gate of the sun' is the first point on the Inca trail that provides view on the Machu Picchu scenery.
The last part of the Inca trail as it arrives to Machu Picchu. The peak in the distance in Machu Picchu (the old one). It gives the ruins its name.
The tall peak on the right is Huayna Picchu provides a spectacular view on the ruins from the direction opposite to Intipunku.
Finally the standard picture of the ruins. The peak is Huayna Picchu.
